Friday afternoon offered up a selection of reps and races for lanes. The USA crews performed reasonably well in the reps, with all but the two lightweight men's doubles and the LM4- making it through to the Saturday semi-finals.
An illness seems to have afflicted the US squad this weekend; in addition to Guiseppe Lanzone subbing for Jake Cornelius in the men's four as mentioned this morning, Lindsay Shoop also subbed in for Susan Francia in the women's pair. Further, in both the W4x and W8+ races for lanes the US crews failed to start due to illness. Crews are not obliged to take part in races for lanes, so they may still make an appearance in their respective finals on Sunday. By rule, both were relegated to last place but will be able to race in Sunday's final.
Finally, FISA have gone all high tech at Lucerne this year, as the attached photo of the latest in heel restraint measuring devices shows. As modelled by GB umpire John Friend on control commission duties, rumour has it that all referees will be sporting a similar tattoo by the World Champs. When asked about this new innovation, he commented "It had to be the index finger, as using a longer one was deemed to be 'inappropriate'..."
Coverage continues tomorrow morning; see you then!
